Eve Collis, QUEST Scholar, Building Services, Southampton Office

I’m entering my second year at Cambridge University studying Engineering and am being sponsored by Gifford through the QUEST scheme which is run by the ICE. The QUEST scholarship lasts for my entire four years at university. It pays my tuition fees and each summer I will have a paid work placement with Gifford.

I’ve just completed my placement for Summer 2008 with the Building Services section in Southampton. My main job has been working on IES software to model buildings for their thermal performance and CO2 emissions. This includes testing buildings for compliance with Part L of the Building Regulations, one of the primary regulatory tools being used by the UK Government to drive the sustainable buildings agenda. I’ve also been collecting evidence to help clients gain accreditation with BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method).

This year’s placement has been an invaluable experience and has provided a basic understanding of everything that is involved in a building in order to produce the best design, for example the way in which lighting or ventilation can impact the structure and even aesthetics of a building. Also, from spending time in a consulting office, I have an idea of what will be expected of me as an engineering graduate and what sort of career I shall be aiming for.

Working for Gifford in different placements over the next few years will enable me to work within different Sections and Disciplines and with as many different teams as possible in order to gain the widest scope of experience.
